Indian captain Virat Kohli, crediting the victory to the West Indies batsmen, said on Sunday that the team management had enough six options in bowling due to the slow pitch. India had landed with four main bowlers but missed the fifth bowler as Shivam Dubey (68 runs in 7.5 overs) and Kedar Jadhav (11 runs in one over) could not leave the impact. West Indies won the match by eight wickets to take an early lead in the three-match series.
Kohli said after the match, "We felt that six options in bowling would be sufficient, especially when the pitch was playing slow and Kedar was an option, but it played differently in the milky light. He said, "I think he batted very well. The fast bowlers were unable to hold the ball well. Hetmyer played an excellent innings and Hope also. Kohli also praised Shreyas Iyer (70) and Rishabh Pant (71) for scoring a half-century in the Indian innings and recovering from their early setbacks.

He said, "I and Rohit (Sharma) could not walk today and in such a situation they both had a chance and they batted very well on a slow pitch." Regarding the dismissal of Ravindra Jadeja, Kohli said, "Fielder appealed? The umpire said 'not out'. People sitting outside the ground cannot decide what happened there. I have never seen this before.
West Indies captain Kieron Pollard praised Hetmyer and did not overthrow the run-out. Pollard said, "Hetmyer was the target of critics but it was a matter of understanding his role and responsibility. The team management had full faith in him. Regarding Jadeja's run-out, he said, "Finally the right decision was made which is important. We appealed and the umpire did not make the right decision at that time but finally a fair decision was made.

#INDvsWI: Hatemeyer and Hope over Pant, Iyer, West Indies beat India

Chennai: Left-handed batsman Shimron Hetmeyer's aggressive century and his big century partnership with Shai Hope saw the West Indies beat India by eight wickets with 13 balls to spare in a three-match series 1-0 in the first ODI here on Sunday. Took an edge from

Hetmyer scored 139 runs in 106 balls with the help of 11 fours and seven sixes, which is his highest score in ODIs. Hope (102 not out from 151 balls) also played a century. Both of them added 218 runs for the second wicket, which is the second largest partnership for any wicket against India by West Indies.
With this, the Caribbean team won the match by scoring 291 runs for two wickets in 47.5 overs. In contrast, India, who were invited to bat first, did not have a good start, but Shreyas Iyer (70 off 88 balls) and Rishabh Pant (71 off 69 balls) started their 114-run partnership for the fourth wicket. And with the useful contribution of Kedar Jadhav (40 off 35 balls), the team managed to reach 287 runs for eight wickets.
The pitch was slow but Indian bowlers could not take advantage of it. India had landed with four main bowlers and missed the fifth bowler. Shivam Dubey (68 runs in 7.5 overs) and Jadhav (11 runs in one over) were unable to handle the responsibility well.
Apart from this, even experienced bowlers like Mohammad Shami (one for 57 from nine overs) and Ravindra Jadeja (58 runs from 10 overs) were not effective on important occasions. The West Indies did not have a relatively big target, but Deepak Chahar (one for 48) gave India a good start by lbw to Sunil Ambareesh (nine).
After this, however, Hetmyer and Hope finished the innings well. While Hope landed as the charioteer, Hetmyer took up the task of scoring runs. Hetmyer hit Ravindra Jadeja for two consecutive sixes but his six was pulled by pulling Shami's ball.
He became more aggressive after completing his half-century, but slowed down a bit when he reached the century. This 22-year-old batsman reached the triple mark from 85 balls, which is his fifth century in ODIs. At the other end, Hope batted strategically and preferred keeping wickets.
It can be gauged from this that he reached 50 runs off 92 balls which included only three fours. When Hetmyer was on 106, Iyer missed his easy catch, which he celebrated with two consecutive sixes on Jadeja at long on and Shivam Dubey with a six and a four.
He then played a long shot in the midwicket area on Shami too, but its timing was not right and this time Iyer did not make a mistake in taking the catch. Hope remains frozen even after this. He did not show any haste, but when he was 91, he hit his first six and then a four on Chahar to complete the eighth century of his career. Nicholas Pooran (29 not out off 23 balls) Dubey hit three fours in one over, including the winning four.
Earlier, India lost the wickets of opener KL Rahul (six) and captain Virat Kohli (four) in the seventh over. Both of them were sent to the pavilion by Shelder Cottrell. Rohit Sharma (36 off 56 balls) also had to struggle on a slow pitch after which Iyer and Pant made innings.
This is Iyer's third consecutive half-century. Jadhav and Jadeja (21 off 21) also played a half-century partnership in the final overs. Left-arm fast bowlers Cottrell, Chemo Paul and Aljari Joseph took two wickets each from the West Indies. The Indian team was struggling on a slow pitch, scoring 80 runs for three wickets in the 19th over.
After this, Pant and Iyer took over. He did not refrain from playing shots in the air after playing initially. The first six of the innings came in the 28th over when Pant sent Roston Chase off midwicket for six runs. On the other hand, Iyer made some beautiful cuts against spinners Chase and Hayden Walsh.
Both these batsmen played spinners well. Walsh, who had impressive bowling in the T20 series, was not allowed to achieve the rhythm first by Rohit and later by Iyer-Pant. He gave 31 runs in five overs.
His partnership with Pant was broken due to Iyer's dismissal. Pant also got life-giving. He was eventually caught by Kieron Pollard near the borderline. After this, Jadeja and Jadhav took responsibility at their home ground in the IPL and shared a crucial 59-run partnership for the sixth wicket.
Jadhav catches Pollard off Chemo Paul's ball, while Jadeja is run out by Chase, whose decision was given by the third umpire. The next match between these two teams will be played in Visakhapatnam on Wednesday.
